What VIC law says about pet tags
Domestic Animals Act 1994 (Vic)
Under sections 19 and 20 of the Domestic Animals Act 1994, a registered dog or cat found outside the owner’s premises without its council identification marker is an offence by the owner. Farm working dogs and animals at shows are among the exemptions.
The council marker only carries a registration number, so pair it with a personalised tag engraved with your pet’s name and mobile number. A finder can then call you directly instead of waiting for the council to open. Deep diamond engraving will not wear smooth against the council marker jingling beside it.
