What must be worn

Under section 40 of the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995 and regulation 9(1) of the Dog and Cat Management Regulations 2017, a dog must wear a collar with the registration disc last issued for it at all times when it is not confined to the owner’s premises.

Dogs in SA

Dogs must be registered from three months of age through Dogs and Cats Online, renewed annually.
Microchipping is compulsory and is recorded in the same statewide database.
Whenever the dog is not confined to your premises it must wear a collar with the last-issued registration disc (s 40 and reg 9(1)).

Cats in SA

Cats must be microchipped and recorded on Dogs and Cats Online.
A cat found in certain places without the owner’s name, address and phone number on a collar or microchip can lawfully be seized — visible identification protects roaming cats.
